Maytag error codes
Maytag washing machines are built by Whirlpool Corporation on the same platforms as Whirlpool's own, with the same control boards and the same fault codes. If your Maytag shows F9 E1 or F8 E1, the code means exactly what it means on a Whirlpool, and the repair is the same one.

- The water is not leaving the machine in the time the cycle allows.Will not run
F9 E1
- The door or lid will not lock, so the machine refuses to start the cycle.Will not run
F5 E2
- Water is arriving too slowly, so the machine cannot fill in the time it allows.Will not run
F8 E1
- Too much foam, so the machine has paused to deal with it before carrying on.Safe to use
Sd
- The motor cannot reach the speed the cycle asked for.Will not run
F7 E1
- The hot and cold hoses are connected the wrong way round.Safe to use
HC
- There is more water or more foam in the machine than there should be.Stop now
F8 E3
- The machine cannot tell how much water is in the drum.Will not run
F3 E1
- The dispenser system is not delivering detergent the way it should.Will not run
F8 E2
How a Maytag differs
The differences that do exist are mechanical rather than electronic. Maytag positions its laundry around a heavier build and a longer warranty, and the MVW top loaders keep a stronger gearcase than the equivalent Whirlpool. None of that changes what the board reports: the display, the code format and the way you enter the service test are shared across the whole corporation, Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid and JennAir alike.
Where the shortcut stops
Two places where the shortcut stops. Commercial Maytag machines, the ones in laundromats and apartment blocks, run different boards and their own codes. And machines older than roughly 2006, from before Whirlpool acquired Maytag, are genuinely a different lineage: a code on a twenty year old Maytag will not match anything here.
