The machine cannot tell how much water is in the drum.

Cycle will not run

It will not run a cycle it cannot measure, so it stops. Nothing is at risk while it stands, but do not keep restarting cycles: a machine that cannot read its own level is the one that overfills.

What to check yourself

  1. Step 1. Cycle the power for five minutes

    Whirlpool asks for this first and it is worth one attempt. Unplug at the wall, wait five full minutes, plug back in. A single bad reading latches the code even after the condition has passed. If it returns on the next cycle, it is not a glitch and repeating this changes nothing.

  2. Step 2. Check both taps and the water pressure

    A machine filling far more slowly than expected can read as a level fault, because the level does not move when the control expects it to. Open both taps fully and check the fill hoses are not kinked before assuming a sensor has failed.

  3. Step 3. Clean the drain pump filter

    Behind the panel at the bottom front. Water that will not leave looks the same to the control as a level that will not fall, so a blocked filter is worth clearing before anyone opens the machine.

  4. Step 4. Rule out heavy suds

    Foam sits on top of the water and confuses a sensor that is weighing the column above it. Run a rinse and spin with no detergent at all, and if the code stays away, the answer was dosing.

  • The pressure hose, then the sensor

    A thin rubber tube runs from the tub to the water level sensor, and that tube is the usual culprit rather than the sensor itself: it kinks behind the drum, blocks with detergent sludge, or works loose at either end. A technician who knows the machine checks the hose and its two connections before quoting for a part.

When to call a technician

After one reset, a confirmed water supply and a clean filter. This is one of the few codes where the diagnosis genuinely needs the machine opened, so there is little value in postponing it.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask

Whirlpool only says to reset it. Is that really all there is?
It is all Whirlpool publishes, and that is why this page exists. The reset clears a one-off misread. What Whirlpool does not tell you is that the part which usually fails is the thin pressure hose, not the sensor, and that is worth saying to whoever comes out.
Can I keep using it on a short cycle?
Better not to. The same sensor decides when to stop filling, so a machine that is guessing at the level is the one that ends up overfilling. That turns a modest repair into water on the floor.
