What to check yourself
Step 1. Close both water taps
First action, before diagnosis. If the valve is stuck open this is the only thing between you and a wet floor. If the cause turns out to be foam, you have lost nothing.
Step 2. Look through the door: water or foam?
This single look decides everything that follows. A drum packed with white foam is a detergent problem and costs nothing to fix. A drum filling with clear water while the machine sits idle is a stuck valve and needs a part. People skip this and buy the part first.
Step 3. If it is foam, rinse it out and cut the dose
Run a rinse and spin with no detergent, twice if the foam is heavy. Then halve what you were using and check the box says HE. Whirlpool also names a specific culprit here that catches people out: no splash and easy pour bleach contains thickeners that foam heavily in a high efficiency machine, so use plain liquid bleach instead.
Step 4. If it is water, watch the level with the machine off
With the taps open and the machine switched off, no water should enter the drum at all. If the level creeps up anyway, the fill valve is stuck open mechanically. Leave the taps closed until it is replaced.
Step 5. Clean the drain pump filter
Behind the panel at the bottom front. A machine that cannot drain properly reads as overfilled even when the amount of water arriving is normal, and a blocked filter is the usual reason it cannot.

Pressure sensor, its hose, or the fill valve
The machine judges level through a thin air hose running to a pressure sensor. A blocked or kinked hose makes it read low, so the machine keeps filling. That hose and the fill valve are the two parts that produce this code once foam is ruled out.
When to call a technician
As soon as you have seen water enter the drum with the machine switched off. If the cause is foam, no call is needed at all: it is dosing, and a technician will tell you the same thing after charging for the visit.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

- How is this different from Sd?
- Sd is the machine telling you it has found foam and is dealing with it, which is routine. F8 E3 is the machine giving up because the level is wrong, and that can be foam or genuinely too much water. Look through the door before deciding which one you have.
- Bleach caused this?
- It can, and it is the least obvious cause on the list. No splash and easy pour bleach is thickened so it pours slowly, and those thickeners foam heavily in a high efficiency drum. Plain liquid bleach does not do it.
