Step 1. On a new machine, check the shipping bolts came out
This is the first thing to check and it catches a lot of people. Whirlpool washers ship with four bolts and plastic spacers through the back panel that hold the drum rigid in transit, and every one of them has to come out before the machine runs. Left in, they stop the drum moving freely and the board reads that as a motor that cannot reach speed. Look at the back panel: if there are bolt heads in a square pattern, that is your answer.
Step 2. Take half the laundry out
An overloaded drum, especially one holding a soaked duvet or a rug, can be heavy enough that the motor cannot bring it up to speed. Redistribute what is left and run a short cycle.
Step 3. Turn the drum by hand
With the machine unplugged, spin the drum. It should turn freely with a light rumble. Grinding, catching or refusing to move means something is jammed between the drum and the tub, often an underwire or a coin that worked through the seal.
Unplug at the wall first. A drum that starts turning under power with a hand inside it is a serious injury.
Step 4. Reset the control
Disconnect the machine from power for five minutes and reconnect. A genuine one-off glitch clears here. If the code comes straight back, it is not a glitch and repeating this achieves nothing.

Motor, tachometer or control unit
If the bolts are out, the drum turns freely and the load is reasonable, the fault is the drive motor, the tachometer that reports its speed, or the motor control unit. Telling these apart needs meter readings on a live machine.
When to call a technician
Immediately if there is any burning smell, grinding or if the drum will not turn by hand. Otherwise after the shipping bolts, the load and a reset have all been ruled out.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

- Is it worth repairing on an older machine?
- A motor control unit or a drive motor lands between two hundred fifty and seven hundred dollars, against five hundred to fifteen hundred for a new machine. Under about eight years old it is usually worth doing; past that the sums stop working.
