Whirlpool washing machine error code F8 E2

The dispenser system is not delivering detergent the way it should.

Cycle will not run

Nothing is at risk and nothing is leaking, but the cycle stops. This is among the most owner fixable faults on the machine: the usual cause is set detergent in a drawer that has not been cleaned in a year or two.

What to check yourself

  1. Step 1. Pull the dispenser drawer right out and look inside it

Not a glance at the front, all the way out. Liquid detergent and softener dry into a gum that narrows the passages until water cannot flow through them. Wash the drawer in hot water with a brush until the holes are visibly clear.

  2. Step 2. Clean the housing the drawer slides into

This is the half people miss. Reach into the empty slot with a torch: the roof of it has jets that spray water into the drawer, and they silt up with the same gum. Wipe and rinse what you can reach, and take a soft brush to the jets.

  3. Step 3. Check the detergent cartridge on machines that have one

Load and Go and similar automatic dispensers use a removable cartridge. If it is clogged, empty, or not seated fully, the machine reports the same fault. Pull it, rinse it, and refit it until it clicks.

  4. Step 4. Make sure the drawer is fully closed

Worth checking before anything else on machines where the drawer has been out for cleaning. A drawer standing a few millimetres proud reads as a dispenser fault, and the fix is to push it home.

What a technician will look at

Described so you know what you are paying for, not as steps to repeat.

  • Reset, then look at the dispenser motor or valve

If the drawer and its housing are clean and the code returns, the fault is in the part that operates the dispenser: a small motor or solenoid valve behind the panel, on a live circuit next to the water connections.

When to call a technician

Only after the drawer, the housing and the cartridge have all been cleaned and the code still comes back. Everything up to that point is a bowl of hot water and ten minutes.

What the repair costs

RepairPart onlyFitted by a technician
Cleaning the drawer, housing or cartridge-Free
Dispenser motor or valve replacement-$150 to $350

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask

I never use the dispenser, I put detergent straight in the drum. Why does it matter?
Because the machine still runs the dispenser as part of the cycle and still expects water to flow through it. An unused drawer clogs just as readily, since old residue dries out rather than being rinsed away.
How often should the drawer be cleaned?
Every couple of months is plenty, and it takes five minutes. Households that use liquid softener need it more often than those that do not: softener is the stickiest thing that goes through there and it is what usually sets hard.
