GE dishwasher error codes

GE dishwashers have two generations of codes. Older machines flash a C and a number, and you will not find those in the owner's manual because GE wrote them for technicians. Current GDT, GDF and PDT models spell it out instead: H2O, FTD, 999, LEAK DETECTED. Same brand, two languages, and the repair under each is often the same.

Stop the machine if you see these

C4, 999, LEAK DETECTED mean water or electrical trouble rather than a blockage. Turn the tap off, unplug the machine and read the page before running another cycle.

All 12 codes

CodeWhat it means

C1

Will not run		Draining is happening, but too slowly: the pump-out ran for more than two minutes without finishing.

C2

Will not run		The machine has been trying to pump out for more than seven minutes in total, and it is beeping to tell you it gave up.

C3

Will not run		The machine will not drain at all: the control asked for a pump-out and nothing happened.

C4

Stop now		There is more water in the machine than there should be: it filled twice, or the float that should have stopped the fill did not.

C5

Will not run		The pump-out finished almost immediately because there was hardly any water to pump: the machine did not fill properly.

C6

Safe to use		The water coming into the machine is colder than the 120 degrees Fahrenheit it expects, and the cycle could not make up the difference.

C7

Will not run		The water temperature sensor circuit is not giving the control a reading it can use.

C8

Safe to use		The detergent cup could not open fully: something in the load is pressing against its lid.

FTD

Will not run		Failure to drain: the cycle ended, or stopped, with water still in the tub.F56

H2O

Will not run		Not enough water arrived in the time the machine allows for filling.

999

Stop now		On machines with Floor Protect with Alert, water has reached the sensor in the base pan. On the entry models without it, the control has locked and wants a reset.

LEAK DETECTED

Stop now		The moisture sensor in the base pan is wet. The machine has cancelled the cycle and pumped out what it could.

Things that look like faults but are not

These stop people mid-wash and send them looking for a repair. None of them needs one.

PF

The power went off while the machine was on. Pick the cycle and options again and press Start. If it shows often with no outage in the house, have the outlet and the circuit looked at rather than the dishwasher.
Cup Open
The detergent cup was not latched shut, so the machine is reminding you before it starts. Add detergent, close the cup until it clicks, and press Start. If you meant to run without detergent, press Start again without opening the door.
1H to 9H
Delay Start is set: the number is how many hours until the cycle begins. It is not a fault. Press Delay Start again or cancel the cycle to run it now.
