What to check yourself
Step 1. Check the supply valve under the sink
GE's first step and the most common answer. The valve on the hot water line under the sink gets nudged shut during plumbing work or when something heavy goes into the cabinet. Open it fully and run the cycle again.
Step 2. Tap the float cover
The plastic dome at the front left of the tub floor. If the float under it is stuck up, the machine believes it is already full and stops filling straight away. Tap it, lift it and let it fall, then check for whatever held it.
Step 3. Check the inlet hose for a kink
Pull the machine forward enough to see the braided or copper line to the inlet valve. A tight bend or a crushed hose starves the fill.
Step 4. Clean the inlet valve screen
Water off, line disconnected at the valve, and a small mesh screen sits in the inlet. Sediment from the water heater collects there over years and the fill slows until the timer gives up on it.
Turn the supply off before disconnecting the line, and have a towel under the fitting.

Test the inlet valve
If the supply is on, the screen is clean and the float is free, the valve solenoid itself is next. It is metered at its terminals and, if open, replaced as a unit.
When to call a technician
When the supply is fully open, the screen is clean and the float moves, but the tub still fills short. What is left is the inlet valve or a wiring fault to it, and both are a quick job for someone who does them weekly.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- Water pressure in the house is fine. Why would the fill be short?
- The dishwasher fills through its own valve with its own screen, and both can restrict without the house pressure changing. Also check the float: a stuck float ends the fill regardless of pressure.
- Can a clogged screen really cause a code?
- Yes. The control gives the fill a fixed time. A screen that lets half the flow through fills half the tub in that time, and the pump-out that follows is over in seconds, which is exactly what C5 measures.
