What to check yourself
Step 1. Note which cycle it happened on
GE's own rule: H2O only during the 1-Hour Wash means a fault the machine needs service for, and the other cycles can be used meanwhile. H2O on the regular cycles means the supply, and the rest of this list applies.
Step 2. Open the supply valve fully
Under the sink, on the hot line. It gets nudged during plumbing work and after anything heavy goes into the cabinet. A valve open a quarter turn fills the tub, but not in the time the control gives it.
Step 3. Check the inlet hose for a kink
Pull the machine forward and look at the line to the inlet valve. A tight bend or a hose crushed against the cabinet side gives exactly this.
Step 4. Lift the flood float in the sump
Filters out, and in the sump there is a small float. Lift it straight up and let it drop; if it was held up by a seed or a shard, the control believed the tub was full and ended the fill early. GE describes this float on every GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT and ZDT model.
Check for glass first.
Step 5. Clean the inlet valve screen
Supply off, line off at the valve, and a small mesh screen sits in the inlet. Sediment from the water heater collects there and throttles the fill a little more each year.

Test the inlet valve and the pressure sensor
If the supply is good and the float is free, the valve solenoid is metered and the pressure sensor checked for a fouled hose or a bad reading. A sensor that reports full too early gives H2O with a perfectly good supply.
When to call a technician
Straight away if H2O appears only on the 1-Hour Wash, because GE says so and the other cycles still work. Otherwise once the supply is fully open, the hose is straight, the float is free and the screen is clean.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- Why does GE treat the 1-Hour Wash differently?
- The fast cycle fills and heats on a tighter schedule, so a marginal fault shows there first. GE reads H2O on that cycle alone as an early warning from inside the machine rather than a supply problem, and says to book service while using the other cycles.
- The machine is not level. Could that matter?
- It can. A tub that leans forward puts the water away from the sensor, and the control reads a low level. Check the feet before paying for a part.
