What to check yourself
Step 1. Press Reset, then look at whether water actually left
Silence the beep first, then open the door. If the tub is empty, the drain is slow but working and you are really looking at a C1 restriction. If water is standing in the bottom, the drain path is closed somewhere and the rest of this list applies.
Step 2. Check everything downstream of the machine
Air gap cap off and cleared, disposal run and its inlet checked for the knockout plug, drain hose followed for a kink. These are the C1 checks and they still come first, because seven minutes of pumping into a blocked outlet looks exactly like a failed pump.
Step 3. Bail the tub and clear the sump
With standing water you cannot see the sump. Sponge the water out, lift the filter and check the drain opening for a fruit sticker, a seed pod or a piece of glass laid across it. On this design the drain opening is small and one sticker can seal it.
Glass hides under grey water. Look before you reach.

Check the drain valve and check ball
These GE machines drain by opening a valve at the pump with a solenoid, and a rubber check ball stops sink water running back in. A ball that sticks in its seat, or a solenoid that has stopped pulling, gives a pump that runs and moves nothing. The technician tests the solenoid and inspects the valve with the machine out.
Check the pump impeller and belt
A drain impeller with a broken vane, or on some models a slipped pump belt, gives the same symptom. Both are seen after a piece of glass has been through the pump.
When to call a technician
Once the outlet is proven clear and the sump is clean but the tub still does not empty. Everything left is at the pump, and reaching it means the machine comes out.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.
Codes people confuse this with
- Draining is happening, but too slowly: the pump-out ran for more than two minutes without finishing.
C1
- The machine will not drain at all: the control asked for a pump-out and nothing happened.
C3
- There is more water in the machine than there should be: it filled twice, or the float that should have stopped the fill did not.
C4
Questions people ask
- What is the difference between C1 and C2?
- Time. C1 fires when one pump-out passes two minutes. C2 fires when the drain phase as a whole passes seven minutes, which means the machine already retried and failed. Same fault, further along.
- Is it worth fixing on a machine this old?
- A valve or solenoid at 150 to 350 on a machine that otherwise works is reasonable. If the pump motor itself has gone and the machine is past fifteen years, a new dishwasher at 400 to 1000 usually wins.
