Step 1. Turn off the water and cut the power
Supply valve under the sink, power at the breaker or the plug. Do both first, because everything below means reaching under an appliance that has water in it.
There is water in the base of a mains powered appliance. Do not work on it live, and do not rely on the switch on the front panel.
Step 2. Ask what detergent has been going in
The check people skip because it feels too simple, and it explains a large share of these. Hand washing up liquid, or a pod topped up with extra powder, makes foam that climbs out of the sump and drips into the base. There is no leak at all: the machine is drowning in suds.
Step 3. Dry the base out completely
The sensor will not release while it is damp under there, and this is where most attempts fail. Towels through the bottom panel, then a fan blowing underneath for several hours. Fifteen minutes with the power off is not drying, it is waiting.
Step 4. Check the spray arms for cracks
A cause that is specific enough to be worth naming: a cracked spray arm sprays sideways instead of upward, water hits the door seal from the wrong angle and finds its way out. Take each arm off, hold it up to the light and look along its length.
Step 5. Inspect the door gasket along its whole length
Run a finger round it. You are looking for a section that has gone hard, a tear, or a piece that has popped out of its channel at a corner. Any of the three lets a dribble out at every fill, which is enough to trip this over a few cycles.

Find the leak with the panels off
If the code returns once the base is dry, water is still arriving. Finding it means running the machine uncovered and watching where it appears, which is a live appliance with water flowing.
When to call a technician
If the code comes back after the base has been properly dried and the detergent dose has been cut. A repeat means real water, and it will keep arriving until it is found. Call sooner if you see water on the kitchen floor rather than just under the machine.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- There is no water on my floor. Why does it say leak?
- The sensor sits in the base of the machine, not on your floor. It trips on water that has not escaped yet. You caught it early, which is what the system is for.
- How long does the base actually take to dry?
- Several hours with a fan under it, longer without one. This is the single reason people conclude the machine is dead when it is not. Give it overnight before deciding.
- My LG dishwasher showed LE and that was the motor. Which is right?
- Both, for their own machines. Samsung uses LE and LC for a leak, LG uses LE for a motor fault. Same two letters, different manufacturers, completely different repairs.
- It cleared after drying. Is it fixed?
- It is cleared, which is not the same thing. If foam put the water there and you actually change the detergent, then yes. If something drips, the base fills again and the code returns within a few cycles.
