What to check yourself
Step 1. Check the box says HE
The most common cause by a distance. An LG high efficiency drum uses a fraction of the water an old machine did, and ordinary detergent foams uncontrollably in it. Non HE detergent produces this code on nearly every wash, and no amount of cleaning changes that.
Step 2. Measure the dose instead of pouring it
One to two tablespoons of HE detergent covers a normal load. The amount printed on the box assumes a full drum of heavily soiled laundry in hard water, which is not most washes. Halving the dose fixes this permanently in most households.
Step 3. Count what else is going in
The overlooked one. Detergent boosters, oxygen bleach, extra softener, hand wash liquid used in a pinch: each is mild on its own and together they foam heavily. Everything that goes into the drawer counts toward the total.
Step 4. Run extra rinses now
To clear the current load, run a rinse and spin with no detergent, twice if the drum is still white with foam. On a top loader you can scoop the worst of it out first, which is faster than rinsing it away.
Step 5. Clean out what has built up
If the code appears on correct doses, there is old detergent in the dispenser, the hoses and the drum. Wash the dispenser drawer by hand and run the tub clean cycle with a washer cleaner or white vinegar in an empty machine.
When to call a technician
Almost never. If heavy foam appears with no detergent at all in a machine you have already flushed out, the level sensing or the drain is worth looking at. Everything else here is dosing.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- The cycle has been running for hours. Is it stuck?
- Probably not. Suds reduction adds rinse after rinse until the foam clears, and on a badly overdosed load that genuinely takes a long time. Let it finish once, then halve the dose from the next wash.
- Can foam cause other codes?
- Yes, and this is worth knowing before you chase the wrong fault. Foam stops the pump moving water, which brings on a drain code, and it confuses the pressure sensor, which brings on a level code. Fix the dosing and both usually go with it.
