What to check yourself
Step 1. Open both taps fully
Not partly, fully, and both of them even if you only ever wash cold: many cycles draw from each side. A tap left half open after plumbing work is the single most common answer to this code.
Step 2. Look at both fill hoses along their run
Pull the machine out and follow each hose end to end. The usual pinch is right behind the machine where the hose has been trapped against the wall. Straighten it and leave a hand's width of clearance when you push the machine back.
Step 3. Clean the inlet filters
Each hose screws onto the machine over a fine mesh screen, and in hard water it silts up with scale and grit within a few years. Close the taps, unscrew the hoses, rinse the screens or brush them out, and refit. This is the last free check.
Close the taps first and keep a towel underneath: the hoses stay full even after the supply is off.
Step 4. Measure the flow with a bucket
Hold a hose over a bucket with the tap fully open for fifteen seconds. A confident jet is fine. A weak trickle means the house supply is the problem, and nothing done to the washer will help.
Step 5. Rule out a drain that is running while it fills
Worth a look before calling anyone. If the drain pump runs continuously, or the drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe and siphons, water leaves as fast as it arrives and the machine reports a fill fault for what is really a drain problem. Watch the standpipe while the machine fills.

Replace the water inlet valve
If both taps flow well and the screens are clean, the valve inside the machine is not opening. Modest part, but it lives behind the back panel where the water connections and the live circuit meet.
When to call a technician
After the taps, the hoses and the screens are ruled out and the supply itself is proven good. If the machine fills but very slowly, that is the same conclusion: the valve or a screen you have not reached.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- My display shows 1E, not IE. Is that a different fault?
- On an LG it is the same one. A seven segment display cannot tell a capital I from a digit 1, so the fill code reads as 1E on plenty of machines. Be careful searching by that spelling though: on a Samsung, 1E belongs to the leak and water level group and means something else entirely.
- It fills eventually, but the code still appears.
- The machine is not asking whether water arrives, it is asking whether enough arrives in time. Slow filling and no filling produce the same code, and the usual cause of slow filling is a silted inlet screen.
