LG washing machine error code dE

The machine cannot confirm the door is closed and locked, so it refuses to start.

Cycle will not run

Nothing is at risk. The machine will not run with an unlocked door by design, so this is an interlock refusing to be overridden rather than damage.

What to check yourself

  1. Step 1. Push the door until it clicks

The latch makes an audible click when it seats. On a full load, laundry pressing against the opening holds the door a fraction short of that click, and the machine is right to refuse.

  2. Step 2. Check the seal all the way round

Run a hand around the gasket. A sock or a shirt tail trapped between the door and the seal is enough. On a top loader, check the rim the lid closes onto and that nothing is resting on the lid.

  3. Step 3. Unplug for ten seconds and try again

LG asks for this specifically, and it is worth doing once. A one-off misread clears here. If the code returns immediately, it is not a glitch and repeating the reset achieves nothing.

  4. Step 4. Look at the striker and the latch face

The tongue on the door should be straight and square. A bent striker, usually from the door being leaned on, stops the lock engaging even when everything looks shut. Compare it with how it sits on a machine that works if you have one to hand.

What a technician will look at

Described so you know what you are paying for, not as steps to repeat.

  • Replace the door lock assembly

The lock is both a catch and the switch that tells the board the door is shut, and it usually fails outright rather than gradually. Inexpensive part behind the panel, on a live circuit.

When to call a technician

When the door closes with a clear click and the machine still reports it, or when the door will not release at the end of a cycle. Forcing a locked door breaks the handle long before it breaks the lock.

What the repair costs

RepairPart onlyFitted by a technician
Clearing the seal, closing the door properly-Free
Door lock or lid switch replacement-$150 to $350

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between dE1 and dE2?
dE1 says the door is open, so look for laundry in the way or a door that was never pushed to. dE2 says it is closed but the lock will not engage, which points at the striker or the lock itself and is the more likely of the two to need a part.
The door will not open now the cycle has stopped.
Most LG machines keep the door locked while there is water in the drum, and some hold it for a minute or two after the cycle ends. Drain the machine through the tube behind the bottom panel first, then try again before assuming the lock has failed.

Which machines this applies to

Applies to

LG front load, top load, pedestal and WashTower machines. Front loaders split the fault: dE1 means the door is open, dE2 that it is closed but will not lock. Top loaders show DL for a failed lid switch, which is the same repair.
