LG dishwasher error code LE

The control board is not getting the response it expects from the wash motor.

Cycle will not run

No. The motor drives the water round the machine, so without it there is no wash at all. Nothing is unsafe, but the cycle will stop wherever it noticed.

What to check yourself

  1. Step 1. Cut the power for five minutes

Worth doing first because it costs nothing and it genuinely works often enough. Motor faults on LG dishwashers come in two kinds: a board that has latched an error after a power blip, and a motor that has actually failed. The reset separates them. Breaker off, five minutes, then a short cycle.

  2. Step 2. Clear the filter and sump before blaming the motor

Do this even though the code says motor. Something jammed against the impeller loads the motor, the speed signal falls out of range, and the board reports a motor fault when the real problem is a cherry stone. Lift the filter out and feel round the sump.

Power off first. Glass and bone fragments in a sump are sharp and hard to see.

  3. Step 3. Note whether the code comes back straight away or later in the cycle

This is worth telling the technician and hardly anyone thinks to look. An immediate fault points at wiring or the board; a fault that appears part way through, after the machine has warmed up, points at motor windings breaking down under heat. It shortens the diagnosis noticeably.

What a technician will look at

Described so you know what you are paying for, not as steps to repeat.

  • Test the motor and its harness

The wash motor sits under the tub and is reached from below. It is metered for winding resistance and its harness checked back to the board for corrosion, chafing and loose plugs. On LG dishwashers a corroded connector is a common finding and a cheap fix, which is why testing beats replacing.

When to call a technician

As soon as the reset and a clean sump have not cleared it. Everything left is under the machine with the power on, and the useful part of the diagnosis is telling a failed motor from a bad connector, which needs a meter rather than a guess.

What the repair costs

RepairPart onlyFitted by a technician
Power cycle, if it was a latched fault-Free
Diagnosis and harness or connector repair-$100 to $250
Wash motor replacement$90 to $250$250 to $550

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask

Is LE the same as CE on this machine?
Yes. LG gives both codes the same description and the diagnosis does not differ: motor or the wiring to it. Which one you see depends on the model.
My LG washing machine shows LE and that is a motor fault too. Related?
Same idea, different machine and a different motor. Do not carry parts or symptoms across. Worth knowing: on a Samsung dishwasher those same two letters mean a leak, which is a completely different repair.
The motor is expensive. Is the machine worth fixing?
Do the arithmetic honestly. A motor plus labour lands between 250 and 550, and a mid range dishwasher is 400 to 1000. On a machine over about seven years old, that is usually the point to stop repairing.

Which machines this applies to

Applies to

LG dishwashers across the LDF, LDT, LDP and LSDF ranges. LG documents CE with the same meaning as LE, and the checks are identical, so both spellings lead here.
