What to check yourself
Step 1. Open the supply valve fully
Under the sink there is a small valve feeding the dishwasher. Half open is enough to run a slow fill and not enough to beat the timer, so the machine seems to work for a while and then fails. If anyone has been working under that sink recently, start here.
Step 2. Straighten the supply hose behind the machine
The braided line kinks against the wall when the machine is pushed back into its housing, which is why this fault so often appears right after a kitchen job or a floor being laid. Pull the machine forward and look at the whole run.
Step 3. Clean the mesh screen inside the inlet valve
This is the check that fixes the fault for nothing and that almost nobody knows about. Turn the water off, unscrew the supply hose from the back of the machine, and look into the valve fitting: there is a fine mesh screen there catching grit from the pipework. An old toothbrush under a running tap clears it. On houses with older galvanised plumbing this fills up every few years.
Turn the supply valve off before undoing the hose, and have a towel ready for the water left in the line.
Step 4. Check where the drain hose ends up
A surprising cause with an obvious symptom once you see it: if the drain hose is not looped up high, water siphons out of the machine as fast as it comes in, and the level never rises. The machine is filling perfectly and still reports a fill fault. The hose needs to rise to counter height before it drops to the drain.
Step 5. Check the pressure, especially on a well
LG asks for household pressure between 20 and 120 PSI. Below that the fill is too slow to finish in time. If you are on a well pump or the house is at the end of a long run, and other taps are also weak, the machine is reporting a real problem that is not its own.

Test the inlet valve
If water reaches the machine and the machine still will not fill, the valve is the suspect. It is metered for coil resistance and checked for voltage while the cycle calls for water. Voltage present and no flow means the valve; no voltage means the board.
When to call a technician
When the valve is open, the hose is straight and unkinked, the mesh screen is clean and the pressure at the nearest tap is normal, but the machine still will not fill. From there the work is inside the machine and involves live electrical testing next to water.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- The display shows 1E, not IE. Is that a different code?
- It is the same code. LG calls it IE for inlet, and a seven segment display draws that capital I as a vertical bar, which reads as a one. Search either way and you land on the same fault.
- Water comes out of the tap under the sink fine. Why does the machine say otherwise?
- The machine measures level in the tub, not flow at the tap, and it has a time limit. Anything that slows the fill down without stopping it, a half open valve or a clogged inlet screen, produces exactly this. The screen is the usual answer.
- It filled fine yesterday. What changed?
- Ask what was moved. This code appears most often just after the machine has been pulled out for a floor, a leak or a new disposal, and the supply line has been left kinked behind it.
