Samsung washing machine error code dC

The lock has not engaged, so as far as the machine is concerned the door is still open.

Cycle will not run

Nothing is at risk. A washer physically cannot run with an unlocked door, which is a safety interlock doing its job rather than a fault in itself.

What to check yourself

  1. Step 1. Close it properly and listen for the click

The latch gives an audible click when it seats. No click means it has not latched, and on a packed load that presses laundry against the opening this is the whole answer more often than people expect.

  2. Step 2. Run a hand around the seal

A sock or a shirt corner between the door and the gasket holds it a couple of millimetres proud, which is enough for the lock to miss. Check the whole way round, and on a top loader check the rim the lid closes onto.

  3. Step 3. Look at the striker for damage

The tongue on the door should be straight and square to the machine. A bent striker, usually from the door being leaned on or slammed, stops the lock engaging even when everything else is right.

  4. Step 4. Power cycle the machine

Unplug for five minutes and plug back in. A genuine one-off read error clears here. If the code comes straight back, it is not a glitch and repeating this achieves nothing.

What a technician will look at

Described so you know what you are paying for, not as steps to repeat.

  • Replace the door lock assembly

The lock is both a mechanical catch and the switch that reports the door state to the board, and when it fails it usually fails outright. Inexpensive part, but it sits behind the panel on a live circuit.

When to call a technician

If the door visibly closes and clicks and the machine still reports the code, the lock or its wiring has failed. Also call if the door will not open after a cycle: forcing it breaks the handle long before it breaks the lock.

What the repair costs

RepairPart onlyFitted by a technician
Clearing the seal or realigning the door-Free
Door lock assembly replacement-$150 to $350

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between dE1 and dE2?
dE1 says the door is simply open, so look for laundry in the way or a door that has not been pushed to. dE2 says the door is closed but the lock will not engage, which points at the striker or the lock itself.
It only happens on large loads.
Then you are overfilling rather than looking at a broken lock. A packed drum presses laundry against the opening and holds the door a fraction short of the catch.

Which machines this applies to

Applies to

Samsung front load and top load washers. The same fault appears as dE on older machines and dC on newer ones; dE1 means the door is open, dE2 that it is closed but will not lock. Machines with an Add Door show ddC or dC3 for that smaller door instead.
