Step 1. Power cycle once
Switch off at the wall for five minutes and back on. A one-off electronics glitch clears here. If the code returns, it is the heater, and repeating this will not change that.
Step 2. Note whether the water is cold
Open the door part way through a cycle and feel the door and the dishes. Cold confirms the heater rather than a sensor reporting wrongly. It is the first thing a technician will ask.
Step 3. Check the machine has hot water where it expects it
Bosch dishwashers on many US installations are plumbed into the hot supply. If somebody has recently worked under the sink and connected it to the cold line, the machine works far harder and can throw heating faults. Worth ruling out before paying for a part.

Replace the heat pump assembly
On modern Bosch machines the heater is integrated into the circulation pump, so the repair replaces the assembly rather than a separate element. That makes it a bigger job than the equivalent repair on older designs.
When to call a technician
Straight away, once a power cycle has not cleared it. There is nothing safe or useful for an owner to do inside a heating circuit.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

- Is this worth repairing?
- Do the arithmetic honestly. Two hundred to three hundred fifty dollars against four hundred to a thousand for a new machine. Under about five years old it is usually worth it, especially on a mid or upper range Bosch. Older than that, with the pump assembly involved, it is a close call.
- The dishes come out wet as well. Same problem?
- Usually yes. Bosch machines dry with residual heat rather than a fan and an element, so no heating means no drying. Fixing the heating fixes both.
